Edmunds.com says, The function of any transmission is transferring engine power to the driveshaft and rear wheels (or axle halfshafts and front wheels in a front-wheel-drive vehicle). Gears inside the transmission change the vehicle's drive-wheel speed and torque in relation to engine speed and torque.
To state it in layman terms, the transmission takes the power generated by the engine and makes your wheels spin faster, slower, and/or stop spinning depending on what gear is selected. The proper function of the transmission and all of it's internal components is vital to the vehicle's ability to move forwards and backwards.
